New York law looms: Trump's potential harsh punishment

A New York judge is set to issue a final ruling in Donald Trump's civil fraud trial, with potential penalties of hundreds of millions and new restrictions on his family business. This is possible due to a little-known 70-year-old law, known as 63(12), that grants the state Attorney General the authority to pursue those who engage in "repeated fraudulent or illegal acts."

The law does not require the attorney general to show that Trump had intended to defraud anyone or that his actions resulted in financial loss. It also allows the judge to set new restrictions on Trump and his family business, including a lifetime prohibition on Trump serving as a leader of any company based in New York and preventing the company, known as the Trump Organization, from obtaining loans from New York banks for five years.
