Nigerian Brothers Sentenced to 17.5 Years for US Social Media Sextortion Scheme
Nigerian brothers sentenced to 17.5 years for social media sextortion scheme causing 100+ U.S. victims, including a student's death.

On Thursday, two Nigerian brothers were sentenced to 17.5 years in prison by a federal judge in Michigan for their involvement in sextortion schemes on social media that affected over 100 individuals across the United States and led to the tragic death of a high school student. The brothers, Samuel Ogoshi, 24, and Samson Ogoshi, 21, had pleaded guilty to one count of exploitation of minors in April. After serving their sentences, they will also be on supervised release for five years. Extradited from Nigeria in August 2023, the brothers were apprehended following their indictment in November 2022. This extradition represents a significant step in enhancing cooperation with Nigerian authorities to apprehend individuals involved in such scams.
Impact and Consequences
The sextortion schemes led to the exploitation of over 100 individuals, underlining the widespread impact of the brothers' actions. The involvement of a high school student's death due to these intrusive actions further emphasizes the severe consequences of such criminal behavior.
International Cooperation
The successful extradition of the brothers from Nigeria to the United States demonstrates the strengthening of international collaboration in combating cybercrimes and human exploitation. This case serves as an example of effective cooperation between countries in addressing and punishing individuals involved in online criminal activities.
