NYC education workers embezzle funds, take family on trips

NYC education workers misused city funds for trips, allegedly taking families instead of homeless students; termination and restitution recommended, no criminal charges.

Fox News has recently highlighted a shocking report revealing that a manager and five other employees from the New York City Department of Education misused city funds designated for homeless students. They allegedly took their own families on trips to popular destinations such as Disney World, despite the funds being intended for disadvantaged children.

According to a report by Fox News, the Special Commissioner of Investigation (SCI) for New York City schools has alleged that these employees' actions deprived homeless students of the opportunity to experience trips to renowned places such as the Magic Kingdom and other locations like Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Boston, Rocking Horse Ranch Resort in upstate New York, and Frost Valley YMCA campground, all during the period from 2016 to 2019. The New York Post's report disclosed these shocking details about the abuse of funds meant for homeless students.

The Main Perpetrator

Linda Wilson, the regional manager for the NYC Department of Education's Queens Students in Temporary Housing, has been identified as the main perpetrator in these allegations. The report claims that Wilson not only took her two daughters on city-funded excursions but also encouraged her colleagues to do the same with their families. This blatant misappropriation of funds not only goes against the organization's regulations but shows a severe lack of respect for the purpose of these trips.

Violation of DOE Rules

The Department of Education (DOE) has strict rules in place prohibiting employees from bringing their own families on trips, even if the DOE is reimbursed for the costs. However, despite these clear guidelines, Wilson and the other employees allegedly circumvented the regulations. In some instances, they even deceived the system by forging permission slips in the names of students to justify their family members' presence on the trips, as stated in the SCI report.
