Obstetrician and Abortion Rights Advocate Dr. Kristin Lyerly Enters Congressional Race in Wisconsin
Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an abortion-performing doctor, is the first Democrat running in Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District race against two Republicans.

On Thursday, April 2nd, Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an obstetrician and gynecologist, declared her candidacy for the Democratic position in Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District. This move follows the unexpected retirement of Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher, leaving the seat open for the upcoming election.
Dr. Lyerly's announcement comes just two weeks before Gallagher's anticipated departure, eliminating the possibility of a special election. As it stands, she faces no opposition in the Democratic primary, scheduled for August 13th. Notably, the Democratic party did not nominate a candidate in the 2022 election, adding significance to Dr. Lyerly's entry into the race.
On the Republican side, state Sen. Andre Jacque and former state Sen. Roger Roth are currently running, with a third expected to join next week. Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz is also set to make an announcement regarding his candidacy, potentially adding further competition to the race.
Stance on Reproductive Rights
Dr. Lyerly has emphasized that the issue of abortion will be central to her campaign. Notably, she was part of a lawsuit in Wisconsin that successfully maintained the legality of abortions following the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. While practicing across Wisconsin, she temporarily relocated her practice to Minnesota after the ruling.
"As an OB/GYN, I have been attacked first hand by MAGA extremists targeting a woman's right to make her own health choices," Lyerly stated. "I will work tirelessly to ensure that every woman in our state has access to reproductive care, including safe and legal abortions, essential services like maternity care, and mental health support."
However, her stance has faced criticism, with the Wisconsin Right to Life's executive director arguing that the state needs elected officials who protect all life.
Gallagher's departure has notable implications, as it leaves Republicans with a narrow 217-213 majority in the House, allowing little room for party-line vote discrepancies. The district, historically Republican-leaning, has been won by Gallagher and former President Donald Trump by substantial margins. Nevertheless, Democrats have expressed their intention to make the district more competitive.
The 8th Congressional District comprises areas such as the cities of Appleton and Green Bay, Door County, and predominantly rural areas north through Marinette.
It remains to be seen how Dr. Lyerly's entry, alongside the Republican candidates, will shape the dynamics of the upcoming election and impact the representation of Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District.
