Off-Duty NYPD Officer Among Victims Killed in Long Island Nail Salon Crash

On Friday, June 28th, tragedy struck when an SUV crashed into a nail salon in Long Island, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer, Emilia Rennhack.

The incident took place at the Hawaii Nail & Spa on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park. The SUV, identified as a Chevy Traverse, crashed through the front window, causing devastation inside the salon where customers and staff were present.

"The SUV plowed through the front of the salon and almost came out through the back of the store," said Lt. Kevin Heissenbuttel of the Suffolk County police.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DWI

The driver of the SUV, Steven Schwally, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Reports indicate that he was driving at a high speed through a parking lot before crashing into the salon, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and injuries to several others.

Witnesses described the moments leading up to the crash, with one individual stating that the SUV appeared to have been racing through the parking lot before the collision occurred, indicating a sense of urgency in the driver's actions.

"I heard a speeding car followed by a 'shattering' noise," mentioned another witness, conveying the chaos and destruction caused by the SUV.
