Janis Paige, a talented singer, dancer, and actress, passed away at the age of 101 on Sunday at her residence in Los Angeles. The news of her passing was confirmed by her close friend, Stuart Lampert.
Ms. Paige marked her presence in the entertainment industry at the age of 22 with her role in the star-studded 1944 film “Hollywood Canteen.” Subsequently, she appeared in 17 films over the next seven years, garnering minor beauty titles such as Miss Wingspread and Miss Naval Air Reserve.
Rise to Broadway Stardom
Seeking to expand her career, she ventured to the New York stage. Within a remarkably short period of three years, she achieved widespread acclaim, becoming a prominent figure on Broadway.
Ms. Paige landed the role of Babe Williams, the spirited and romance-averse union leader, in the original 1954 Broadway production of “The Pajama Game,” alongside John Raitt. The musical, with contributions from theater luminaries like George Abbott (book), Richard Adler (music), and Hal Prince (producer), went on to win three Tony Awards in 1955.
