Anthea Sylbert, a renowned costume designer who made significant contributions to Hollywood, passed away on June 18 at her home on the Greek island of Skiathos. She was 84 years old, and the cause of her death was complications of emphysema, as confirmed by her stepson, Robert Romanus.
Mrs. Sylbert commenced her career in costume design in 1967, working on various film projects. Over the next decade, she collaborated with esteemed directors such as Mike Nichols, Roman Polanski, and Elaine May. Her exceptional work included creating iconic wardrobes for leading actors like Jack Nicholson in films such as "Chinatown," "The Fortune," and "Carnal Knowledge."
Influence on "Chinatown" and Acclaim from Jack Nicholson
One of her notable achievements was the envisioning of the character Jake Gittes, portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the film "Chinatown" (1974), as a dandy. Jack Nicholson lauded her work, stating, "When ‘The Ant’ does your clothes, you don’t have to act as much," an accolade that Mrs. Sylbert cherished.
After her successful stint as a costume designer, Anthea Sylbert transitioned to become a studio executive. Later, she also became Goldie Hawn’s producing partner, showcasing her versatility and acumen in the film industry.
