Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe Agree to Settle Lawsuit Over Alleged Sexual Assault

Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe reached a settlement regarding Abdul's sexual assault allegations, allowing her to move on to a new chapter in her life.

A legal dispute that spanned nearly a year is heading towards a resolution as Paula Abdul and former "American Idol" producer Neil Lythgoe have come to a settlement regarding allegations of sexual assault that Abdul made against Lythgoe in the early 2000s during her tenure as a judge on the popular talent show.

Settlement Announced in Los Angeles Superior Court

On Thursday, a notice of settlement was filed by Abdul in Los Angeles Superior Court. Although the settlement has been reached, it is now pending approval by a judge. Abdul expressed relief at the development, stating, "I am grateful that this chapter has successfully come to a close and is now something I can now put behind me." She described the ordeal as a "long and hard-fought personal battle" and emphasized her hope that her experience could serve to inspire other women facing similar challenges to overcome their difficulties with dignity and respect.

Unconditional Settlement with Confidential Terms

The court filing indicated that the settlement is unconditional, though the specific terms remain undisclosed. Abdul's attorney, Melissa Eubanks, declined to comment on the particulars of the settlement. Meanwhile, an email seeking comment from attorneys representing Lythgoe has not been answered as of yet.

Allegations of Sexual Assault

The lawsuit, which was filed nearly a year ago, also accused Lythgoe of sexually assaulting Abdul after her departure from "American Idol" and subsequent role as a judge on Lythgoe's other competition show, "So You Think You Can Dance." In response to the allegations, Lythgoe expressed his shock and sadness, labeling the claims as "an appalling smear." Following multiple lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, Lythgoe stepped down from his position as a judge on "So You Think You Can Dance" in January.
