Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr warns of heightened external threats in Indo-Pacific
Philippine President Marcos Jr warns of heightened external threats in the Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the need for preparedness and diplomacy.
Following heightened tension in the Indo-Pacific region, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines addressed troops at a military camp in Isabela province, emphasizing the need for preparedness in the face of potential threats. The President expressed concerns about the country's proximity to Taiwan, an area of interest for China, and the implications of this proximity on the country's security.
During his speech, President Marcos underscored the increased prominence of external threats and urged the troops to remain vigilant and ready for any eventuality. He emphasized the necessity for preparation in light of the evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region. The President's remarks, delivered on Monday, were subsequently relayed by the presidential palace on Tuesday.
Commitment to Diplomacy and Defense
President Marcos clarified that the Philippines is not seeking to redefine its sovereign territory, including its exclusive economic zone, and is dedicated to safeguarding its interests while actively engaging in diplomatic efforts. This stance reflects the country's commitment to maintaining a balance between defense and diplomacy amidst regional challenges.
The Philippines has a longstanding territorial dispute with China, particularly regarding the South China Sea, which facilitates significant annual commerce. Despite the 2016 ruling by The Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidating China's claims in the region, Beijing has steadfastly rejected the decision. The Chinese embassy in Manila did not provide an immediate response to the President's remarks.
"The external threat now has become more pronounced, has become more worrisome, and that is why we have to prepare,"
President Marcos' call for preparedness underscores the significance of addressing emerging challenges to safeguard the country's security and interests amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
