Pope Francis Criticized for Calling on Ukraine to Consider Peace Talks with Russia
Pope Francis criticized for urging Kyiv to negotiate with Russia. Ukrainian and allied officials condemn remarks, emphasizing resistance and refusal to surrender.
Following Pope Francis's recent remarks on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian and allied officials have criticized the pontiff's stance. The officials are of the view that the Pope's comments imply surrender for Kyiv.
Strong Reactions
The foreign minister of Poland, a vocal ally of Kyiv, and Ukraine's ambassador to the Vatican both used World War II analogies to condemn the pope's remarks. They emphasized the importance of Ukraine's determined resistance to Russia's aggression in preventing a mass slaughter of civilians.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski responded to the Pope's comments by urging for equal encouragement for Putin to withdraw his army from Ukraine, suggesting that peace could immediately follow without the need for negotiations.
Ukraine's ambassador to the Holy See, Andrii Yurash, made a statement drawing parallels between the Pope's comments and the appeasement of Adolf Hitler just before World War II.
Vatican's Clarification
A Vatican spokesman later clarified that the Pope supported "a stop to hostilities (and) a truce achieved with the courage of negotiations," rather than an outright Ukrainian surrender. The clarification aimed to address the controversial nature of the remarks made by Pope Francis.
Ukraine's Stance
Despite the pressure for peace talks, Kyiv remains firm on not engaging directly with Russia, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizing that the initiative for peace negotiations must come from the country that has been invaded.
Ukrainians' Resilience
Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, reiterated that surrender is not on the minds of Ukrainians. He highlighted the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people, emphasizing that even in the midst of the fighting in various regions, surrender is not a consideration.
Appeal for Peace
During the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis appealed for peace in Ukraine, expressing his prayers for the cessation of hostilities which have caused immense suffering among the civilian population.
As tensions continue, the differing perspectives on the conflict persist, with both sides emphasizing the need for a resolution that ensures peace without compromising the sovereignty and resilience of Ukraine.
