Pope Francis Hospitalized with Complex Respiratory Infection
Pope Francis hospitalized with complex respiratory tract infection requiring new drug therapy.

Pope Francis is currently hospitalized in Rome after being diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Policlinico Agostino Gemelli on Friday for treatment of bronchitis.
According to the Vatican's press office, initial tests revealed a respiratory tract infection and slight fever. Further testing over the past few days has painted a "complex clinical picture," prompting the need for an "appropriate" amount of time in the hospital. Polymicrobial diseases are caused by combinations of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, as per the National Library of Medicine.
Pope Francis' Condition and Treatment
The Pope's condition is described as stable. He spent his first night in the hospital quietly, engaging in activities such as eating, reading newspapers, praying, and reading. On Sunday, he rested well and continued with therapies, according to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.
His audiences have been canceled through at least Monday while he receives treatment for the infection. The Vatican press office announced a change in drug therapy based on the test results.
Pope Francis has a history of health challenges. He had part of one lung removed as a young man due to a pulmonary infection and has repeatedly experienced influenza and related health issues over the past two years. In 2021, he underwent surgery to address diverticulitis, a painful condition. This year, he had another surgery to repair a hernia.
In his autobiography, “HOPE,” published last month, the Pope acknowledged his age, stating, "The reality is, quite simply, that I am old." Despite his health challenges, he remains dedicated to his duties, often using a wheelchair due to knee and back pain. He emphasizes that "The Church is governed using the head and the heart, not the legs."
