An award ceremony was held to honor a Connecticut State Police dog named Broko, who lost his life in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a suspect. Broko, the first canine to receive the state's K9 Medal of Valor, was remembered as a courageous and loyal protector. The dog was instrumental in safeguarding the lives of troopers and law enforcement officers during a dangerous operation. Vaughn R. Malloy, the suspect being pursued, was later fatally shot by police. Trooper First Class Gregory Fascendini, who had been Broko's handler since 2020, expressed admiration for his canine partner's dedication and skill. Broko's sacrifice marks the first time a Connecticut State Police dog has been killed by gunfire in the line of duty. The suspect, Malloy, had fired multiple shots at the dog and officers as he attempted to escape from a residence in the Pawcatuck area of Stonington.
