Washington — In a recent announcement, President Biden disclosed that his administration would be forgiving $5 billion in student debt for an additional 74,000 borrowers. This latest round of debt cancellation comes after the Supreme Court invalidated the president's student loan forgiveness program. Specifically, the relief will be extended to nearly 44,000 professionals, including teachers, nurses, and firefighters, who are eligible for forgiveness after a decade of public service. Additionally, approximately 30,000 individuals who have been repaying their loans for over 20 years, yet did not receive the expected relief through income-based plans, will also benefit from this initiative. President Biden emphasized his commitment to reforming the student loan system, aiming to alleviate the burden of student loan debt for millions of Americans. Since assuming office, the Biden administration has undertaken various efforts to address student debt, such as introducing a new income-driven repayment plan and providing debt forgiveness for certain eligible borrowers. Despite the Supreme Court's blocking of a broader loan forgiveness program, the administration remains steadfast in its commitment to assisting student loan borrowers.
