President Biden Ramps Up Outreach Amid Speculation Over Re-Election
President Biden increases outreach to Democrats and governors, reassuring them of his commitment to staying in the race and urging unity.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday, July 3rd, engaged in a series of proactive outreach efforts aimed at quelling concerns and rallying support from Democratic lawmakers and governors. The move comes in response to mounting criticism and calls for him to consider stepping down as the party's nominee in the November election, following a perceived lackluster performance in recent weeks.
Outreach and Support from Democratic Governors
President Biden held discussions with congressional Democratic leaders and convened a meeting on Wednesday evening with Democratic governors, a significant number of whom attended the meeting in person. The gathering was marked by a unified stance of support and solidarity, with several governors expressing unwavering backing for the president and affirming their collective commitment to securing victory in the upcoming election.
"We are all looking for the path to win. All the governors agree with that. President Biden agrees with that," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, stated. "He has had our backs through Covid, through all of the recovery, all of the things that have happened. The governors have his back, and we’re working together."
Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland emphasized the resolute nature of the group, stating, "Listen, we’re governors. We don’t do hand wringing. And come November, we got a binary choice, and the binary choice is between someone who is continually delivered for us in our states, the people of our states, and frankly, someone whose vision for the future of this country is downright dangerous."
Unified Commitment and Reassurances
Following the meeting, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan affirmed her support for President Biden, stating, "He is our nominee. He is in it to win it and I support him." Similarly, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California echoed his commitment, stating, "I heard three words from the president — he’s all in. And so am I. Joe Biden’s had our back. Now it’s time to have his."
The meeting with governors also served as an avenue for the president to seek the advice and expertise of Democratic governors, with a particular focus on the importance of electing Democrats up and down the ballot.
Reaffirming Commitment and Unity
During an all-hands call with campaign staffers, President Biden unequivocally communicated his intention to remain in the race, dismissing any notions of stepping down. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated the president's stance during a press briefing, confirming that Biden is resolutely committed to continuing his candidacy.
Biden emphasized the importance of Democratic unity, drawing parallels with the successful campaign against Donald Trump in 2020 and underlining the necessity for a unified front in the upcoming election.
Strong Support from Campaign Leaders
Biden campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon and Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodriguez organized the all-hands meeting to reinforce the campaign's unity and focus. In an email to campaign staff, they outlined the campaign's immediate priorities and the strategy for emphasizing the stability of the race, in contrast to former President Donald Trump's approach.
Strategic Engagements and Encouragement
President Biden also engaged in discussions with key Democratic leaders, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Rep. Jim Clyburn. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients rallied White House staffers, urging them to remain focused on the president's agenda and to disregard external distractions.
Collaboration with Democratic Governors
The meeting with Democratic governors culminated in a reaffirmation of support for President Biden, with an emphasis on the collective determination to secure victory in the upcoming election. The governors' backing and strategic insights are poised to play a pivotal role as the campaign progresses.
As President Biden solidifies his support base and reaffirms his commitment to the race, the Democratic Party moves forward with a renewed sense of unity and purpose as they gear up for the challenging election ahead.
