President Luis Abinader Wins Re-election in Dominican Republic's Landmark Vote

Dominican President Luis Abinader easily won re-election, securing 57% of the vote, avoiding a runoff with his closest rival.

Following a period of sweeping restrictions on Haitian migrants and a robust economy, President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic has secured his re-election in a resounding victory. Mr. Abinader, aged 56, who initially ascended to power by pledging to combat corruption, clinched a remarkable 57 percent of the vote on Sunday, obviating the need for a runoff with his nearest contender, three-time former president Leonel Fernández. Mr. Fernández garnered 29 percent of the vote, as indicated by the Dominican Republic’s national electoral authority, after 100 percent of polling stations had been tallied.

The official results were officially disclosed on Tuesday night, notwithstanding Mr. Abinader’s main rivals conceding on Sunday night. A former executive in the tourism sector, Mr. Abinader had established a commanding lead leading up to the election, while his adversaries struggled to dislodge one of Latin America’s most esteemed incumbents.

During his victory speech, Mr. Abinader expressed gratitude to his competitors and supporters, affirming, “I accept the trust placed in me. I will not let you down.”
