Relief Ship Prepares to Depart Cyprus for Gaza amid Looming Famine Crisis

Relief ship from Cyprus to Gaza aims to aid famine-threatened population, amid deadlock in Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks. US also plans aid through Cyprus.

As the situation in Gaza reaches a critical point, relief efforts are underway to provide much-needed aid to the population. A ship carrying essential supplies, which is part of a new initiative, is preparing to set sail from Cyprus to Gaza.

European Commission's Initiative

The European Commission has announced the launch of a maritime aid corridor between Cyprus and Gaza, with plans to commence operations as early as this weekend. The initiative is a pilot project led by an international charity and financially supported by the UAE.

Deployment of Vessel

The vessel designated for the first mission is the Open Arms, owned by a Spanish NGO known for its rescue missions at sea. Although its primary role has been rescuing migrants, it is now being deployed to carry out the crucial aid mission. The ship, currently stationed at the port of Larnaca in Cyprus, is expected to depart imminently.

Logistics

Authorities, however, have been unable to provide a precise departure time for the vessel yet. The distance between Cyprus and Gaza is approximately 210 miles, requiring an estimated 15 hours of sailing time.

US Involvement and Aid Preparation

Concurrently, the United States has announced its plans to construct a temporary jetty to facilitate aid delivery into Gaza, given the absence of port infrastructure in the region. Initial aid shipments will also be routed through Cyprus, wherein a screening process, involving Israeli officials, will be conducted to ensure the security of the cargoes before onward delivery to Gaza.

Challenges and Relief Efforts

Efforts towards negotiating a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas have encountered impasses, while the situation in Gaza continues to worsen. The World Central Kitchen charity is actively engaged in organizing aid operations, with a focus on loading essential supplies such as rice, flour, and protein in Larnaca.

It is crucial to note that the funding for these operations is primarily being provided by the UAE, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian intervention as concerns of an impending famine loom large.

Anticipated Aid and Plans for Sustained Assistance

The aid being assembled in Larnaca is only the beginning, with plans for multiple shipments in the pipeline. A statement released by the World Central Kitchen emphasized the necessity for a continuous flow of aid, with an additional 500 tonnes of supplies prepared to follow the initial shipment.

The intention to sail directly to Gaza, along with the construction of a jetty by WCK and its partners in Gaza, highlights the commitment to ensuring a sustained and direct channel for aid delivery.

Background and Blockade

Gaza has been under an Israeli navy blockade since 2007, severely limiting direct sea arrivals. As the humanitarian crisis escalates, the need for expedited aid delivery has become increasingly urgent, with the success of these initiatives holding potential to alleviate the plight of the population in Gaza.
