Rep. Kelly Armstrong Wins Republican Nomination for North Dakota Governor
Rep. Kelly Armstrong wins North Dakota's Republican nomination, supported by Trump, defeating Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, backed by Gov. Burgum.
On a recent vote for North Dakota's Republican gubernatorial nomination, Rep. Kelly Armstrong secured a victory over Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, with the support of former President Donald Trump. Armstrong's win was announced by The Associated Press.
The primary revealed an unusual rift between Trump and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. Burgum, who had chosen not to run for a third term and is being considered as a potential running mate for Trump, had endorsed Miller as his successor. Despite this, Trump expressed his support for Armstrong, who was ultimately favored to win the primary.
Burgum's Perspective
During an interview on CNN, Burgum commented on the differing support, stating that North Dakotans were fortunate to have two great candidates and that regardless of the outcome, the state would have a great governor.
Following the primary results, Burgum extended his congratulations to Armstrong and state Public Service Commissioner Julie Fedorchak. Both Trump and Burgum had endorsed Fedorchak in her race, further adding to the unusual political dynamics in North Dakota.
General Election
Armstrong will now face state Sen. Merrill Piepkorn, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. As a traditionally Republican state, North Dakota has not elected a Democratic governor since 1988, with Burgum himself winning re-election in 2020 by a significant margin.
Armstrong, 47, has been representing North Dakota's at-large congressional district since 2019 and previously chaired the state's Republican Party. In contrast, Miller, 64, positioned herself as a political outsider with a background in the private sector. Similarly to Burgum, she had extensive private sector experience before entering politics, having previously served as the CEO of a large electrical distributor.
Both Armstrong and Miller ran their campaigns as staunch supporters of Trump, emphasizing their loyalty to him during their recent debate.
Responses to Trump's Legal Issues
During the debate, held just after a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in his hush money trial, both candidates defended the former president. Armstrong, a lawyer by profession, expressed confusion over the charges, while Miller, like other Republicans, portrayed the trial as a political maneuver aimed at hindering Trump's re-election efforts.
With the stage set for the general election, North Dakotans are preparing for a significant political contest that will ultimately shape the future leadership of their state.
