Rescue Mission Successful: Hiker Stranded on Colorado's Mount Shavano Located and Saved
A hiker was rescued after becoming disoriented and stranded alone on Colorado's Mount Shavano during a group retreat.

A man who became stranded on a Colorado mountain during a hiking expedition with colleagues has been successfully rescued by emergency services. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was part of a party of 15 co-workers undertaking a hiking retreat on Mount Shavano, a prominent 14,000-foot peak located in the southern Rocky Mountains.
The Challenging Ascent
The group of 15, all colleagues, embarked on the widely used "standard route" to conquer the summit of Mount Shavano. This route, comprising an 11-mile trek as reported by AllTrails, typically takes an average of almost nine hours to complete. The group commenced their expedition at sunrise on August 23.
Social media posts from Chaffee County Search and Rescue recorded the group’s efforts, noting that in a twist that might spark some unconventional conversations at the office in the following days and weeks, one member was left to undertake the "final summit push alone." The individual reached the mountain's summit around 11:30 a.m., later than the rest of his colleagues, and subsequently became disoriented during the descent.
A Disorienting Descent
Due to the movement of belongings left to mark his path by another group of hikers, the man made a wrong turn into a steep boulder field on the mountain's northeast slope. He communicated his location via text to his colleagues, who alerted him that he had taken the wrong route and attempted to provide directions.
As the day progressed, the man continued his descent, sending an updated location pin to his colleagues around 3:30 p.m. Shortly thereafter, the area was hit by a severe storm characterized by strong winds and freezing rain, further disorienting the man. He also lost cellular reception, exacerbating the situation.
Search and Rescue Efforts
At approximately 9 p.m., reports of an overdue hiker were directed to the Chaffee County Search and Rescue team. In response, two teams and a drone pilot were mobilized from the same trailhead where the group had commenced their hike. The teams concentrated their efforts on the vicinity corresponding to the man's last reported location.
However, the inclement weather posed challenges to the rescue operations, particularly for the drone operator, thereby limiting the search area. Despite deploying a helicopter, no signs of activity on the mountain were detected. By 9 a.m. the following morning, after a grueling 12 hours of searching, there was still no trace of the missing individual.
Expanded Search and Unexpected Communication
Consequently, a second, more comprehensive search was initiated with the assistance of multiple rescue teams from across the region. As the search operation progressed, the man "regained enough cell service to make a call to 911," as reported by the Chaffee County Search and Rescue team. During the call, he conveyed that he was "very disoriented" and had suffered at least 20 falls, expressing his inability to get back up after the last fall.
This crucial communication enabled the rescue team to pinpoint the man's location and concentrate their efforts on safely reaching and extracting him. The extraction process proved complex, necessitating the use of ropes to access the gully where the man had fallen. Subsequently, the man was transported to a local hospital for , although specific details regarding his condition were not disclosed by the Chaffee County Search and Rescue team.
Advice Against Solo Hiking
In light of this incident, the organization emphasized the critical importance of never hiking alone, offering a sober reminder of the potential hazards that can arise in outdoor activities. The successful rescue operation underscores the importance of vigilant safety practices and adherence to recommended protocols while engaging in high-altitude hiking endeavors.
