Roadside Bomb Targets Foreign Diplomats in Pakistan, Police Officer Killed in Attack

A roadside bomb targeted a convoy of foreign diplomats in Pakistan's Swat area, killing a police officer and injuring three others.

In a tragic incident on Sunday, a roadside bomb targeted a convoy of foreign diplomats in northwest Pakistan, leading to the death of a police officer assigned to their security detail while injuring three others. The incident occurred in the Swat district, where the diplomats were en route to a tourist resort upon the invitation of the local chamber of commerce, according to police reports.

Police and Diplomats' Unfortunate Encounter

Zahidullah Khan, a police officer from the Swat district, informed NBC News that the attack happened when an improvised explosive device exploded, hitting a police van that was escorting the foreign diplomats. The police officer tragically lost his life on the scene, and three others sustained injuries. However, fortunately, none of the diplomats in the convoy were harmed in the attack, as confirmed by Mohammad Ali Gandapur, the Police Deputy Inspector General of police in Swat. The convoy comprised ambassadors from Indonesia, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Iran, Russia, and Tajikistan. Police had made security arrangements for the foreign diplomats and promptly evacuated them to Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. In a statement, Pakistan's foreign ministry expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officer and confirmed that all members of the diplomatic corps had returned safely to Islamabad.

Condemnation and Safety Measures

Pakistan's President, Asif Ali Zardari, condemned the attack, emphasizing that "Terrosrist elements are enemies not only of the country and nation but of humanity itself." The incident occurred in an area historically known for being a hotbed of Islamist militant insurgency so much so that Polices and the Pakistani army swiftly closed roads and imposed a curfew nearby, while undertaking a search operation. Pakistani counter-terrorist forces have established a strong presence in the Swat valley, which has experienced an uptick in militant attacks since late 2022, following the breakdown of a cease-fire with the government. The valley has previously witnessed severe incidents, including the 2012 attack on Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by Islamist militants in the region.
