Robbery and Assault Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Car Chase and River Escape Attempt

Jaden Hays led police on a high-speed chase from Washington to Oregon, reaching 120 mph and attempting to escape by swimming.

A robbery and assault suspect, identified as Jaden Hays, 27, was apprehended on Monday following a dramatic high-speed car chase that spanned two states and concluded with an attempt to evade arrest by swimming into a river. Hays was wanted on charges of first-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault stemming from an incident on June 25 in Longview, Washington.

Incident Details

It was reported that Hays allegedly stole property from a family member and made threats to harm them, as per information from the Longview Police Department and FOX12 Oregon.

High-Speed Pursuit

Authorities spotted Hays at Miller's Market in Longview around 8 p.m. and initiated a felony traffic stop. However, Hays eluded the officers and engaged them in a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph, as he crossed the Lewis and Clark Bridge into Oregon.

Attempted Escape

Upon entering Oregon, Hays' vehicle was disabled by spike strips near Clatskanie, deployed by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Despite this, Hays abandoned his car and made a desperate attempt to escape by swimming into the Columbia River in a bid to evade arrest.

Law enforcement officials successfully persuaded Hays to return to the shore where he surrendered and was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.

Following his arrest, Hays was booked into Columbia County Jail on charges of felony eluding, resisting arrest, and reckless driving. It is anticipated that he will be extradited to Longview to face the charges against him.

This incident serves as a reminder of the tireless efforts of law enforcement in apprehending individuals who attempt to evade justice, and highlights the perseverance and dedication of officers in ensuring public safety.
