On the early morning of Friday, June 28, amidst heavy thunderstorms and rains, a section of the roof at a terminal in India’s busiest airport collapsed, resulting in injuries and the entrapment of passengers. The incident caused the suspension of all departures from the terminal, which handles domestic flights.
Rescue Operations and Injuries
India’s minister of civil aviation provided updates on the situation, stating that rescue operations were underway at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Emergency responders were present at the site, addressing the aftermath of the collapse. Local fire officials reported that part of the roof had fallen onto the pickup and drop-off area outside the terminal, leading to the crushing of several vehicles. At least six individuals sustained injuries as a result of the incident.
Flight Disruptions
Following the collapse, more than 600 flights departing from the airport experienced delays, with 17 flights being canceled by approximately 8 a.m. The impact of the incident reverberated across flight schedules, affecting numerous passengers and airline operations.
