Russia's Sergey Lavrov Clashes with US and Ukraine Supporters at UN Meeting

The meeting was convened by Russia to criticize Western military aid to Ukraine, which led to a joint statement from diplomats representing over 40 countries underscoring Russia’s “hypocrisy” in criticizing lawful arms transfers to help Ukraine defend itself.

Ukraine’s supporters condemned military support to Moscow from other nations in violation of U.N. sanctions and expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict's impact on global security. China's U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun voiced similar concerns about the threat to global security posed by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Zhang urged the resumption of direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations and emphasized the disruptive impact of the war on the global economy.

Division and Escalating Tensions

The meeting was characterized by calls for intensified peace efforts and growing anxiety from China about the exacerbating threat to global security. Ukraine’s U.N. Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya was critical of Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also criticized Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions and accused Moscow of violating its duty to maintain international peace and security.
