Russia sees Trump's victory as a possible opportunity for a reset in relations with the U.S.
Russian officials view Donald Trump's U.S. presidential victory as a chance for a potential improvement in relations with Moscow.

The Kremlin announced on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not have any immediate plans to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election, as he emerged as the president-elect White House and is on track to becoming the 47th president of the United States. However, senior Russian officials expressed optimism about the Republican's win, viewing it as a potential opportunity for a "reset" in relations between the two nations.
Kremlin's Response
Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov remarked, "I am not aware of the president's plans to congratulate Trump on his election," emphasizing that the United States is considered an unfriendly country directly involved in a war against Russia. Peskov, however, reiterated President Putin's willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue based on justice, equality and mutual understanding.
Trump's victory is perceived positively by Moscow due to the anticipated change in U.S. foreign policy towards Ukraine. Under a Trump administration, there is a likelihood of diminished military aid to Kyiv, aligning with the Republican stance that prioritizes American interests. Trump's administration may also pursue peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, which could impact the ongoing conflict.
Trump and Putin's Previous Relations
During Trump's presidency from 2017 to 2021, his relationship with Putin was characterized by cordiality, despite controversial allegations of collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia. Both leaders, however, denied any wrongdoing, and a subsequent inquiry found no proof of criminal collusion.
Leading up to the 2024 presidential election, Russia downplayed its interest in the outcome, particularly in a potential victory for Trump. In February, Putin expressed preference for Joe Biden, describing him as a more experienced and predictable politician. However, other Russian officials have since perceived Trump's election as a chance for improved relations between the two countries.
