Russia to bolster military with two new armies and 30 formations amid Ukraine tensions

Russia plans to strengthen military with two new armies and 30 formations, advancing further into Ukraine, sparking concerns from the West.

Moscow, April 15, 2023 - Russia has announced today that its soldiers have been successful in pushing Ukrainian forces back. The Russian Defense Ministry has also revealed that the military plans to reinforce its presence by adding two new armies and 30 formations by the end of 2023, following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Current Situation

After overextending its presence in the east and south of Ukraine, Russia swiftly pulled back some of its forces. However, following a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive last year, Russia has been slowly advancing and now controls nearly one-fifth of Ukraine's territory. President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops to further advance after the capture of the small eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka last month.

Defense Minister's Statement

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu addressed senior generals, stating, "Groups of Russian troops continue to squeeze the enemy out of their positions." Shoigu further emphasized the plans to build on recent successes and increase the live-fire impact on enemy targets. The recruitment of hundreds of thousands of contract soldiers will also result in the creation of two new armies and 30 formations, including 14 divisions and 16 brigades.

International Concerns

Western intelligence agencies have expressed concerns over the developments, with some suggesting that the war could be at a turning point. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has warned that Ukraine's survival is in danger, and emphasized the need for increased support from Western allies to prevent further battlefield setbacks.

Security Measures

Sergei Shoigu has confirmed that security has been tightened at Russian government and other facilities, and air defenses have been strengthened. According to Shoigu, Russia shot down 419 Ukrainian drones and 67 rockets during a recent election, inflicting heavy losses on Ukrainian proxies, although Reuters was unable to verify these figures.

Russia's Response

President Putin has reinforced Russia's commitment to ensuring security, mentioning the possibility of carving out a buffer zone from more Ukrainian territory as a defense against attacks by Western-supplied artillery.
