According to reports, the death may have initially been thought to be gang-related. Kuzminov's defection was part of a six-month special operation called "Titmouse." He had also brought stolen fighter jet parts with him when he defected and was promised a reward of $500,000, per a Ukrainian law. In a September interview, Kuzminov called on other Russian soldiers to defect to Ukraine, promising they would be provided for, for the rest of their lives.
