Russian Prosecutors Finalize Espionage Indictment Against American Journalist Evan Gershkovich
Russian prosecutors have finalized an espionage indictment against American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who faces up to 20 years in prison.
After more than a year since the arrest of Evan Gershkovich, the American journalist, Russian prosecutors have announced a significant development in the case, revealing that the espionage indictment against Gershkovich has been finalized. The imprisoned journalist is set to stand trial in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, a location approximately 880 miles east of Moscow, where he was initially arrested.
Evan Gershkovich, aged 32, is expected to be transferred from the high-security Lefortovo prison in Moscow to Yekaterinburg for his trial. According to Yevgeny Smirnov, a Russian lawyer experienced in similar cases, espionage trials in Russia typically last about four months, with the possibility of extending to a year. Furthermore, these trials are generally closed to the news media, as indicated by Mr. Smirnov in a phone interview. If convicted, Gershkovich could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Denial and Response
Despite the charges against him, both Evan Gershkovich and his employer have denied the allegations. Additionally, the United States government has designated Gershkovich as “wrongfully detained,” a classification implying that he is considered a political prisoner.
