The events unfolded on March 9, as a Russian surveillance drone captured footage of a military convoy that had come to a halt in the open while awaiting instructions. The convoy was targeted by a projectile, suspected to be an Iskander tactical ballistic missile, resulting in the destruction of two M901 launcher vehicles of the MIM-104 Patriot air defense system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast.
Identification of the Target
The initial identification of the air defense launchers by Russian social media accounts as Ukraine’s S-300PS medium-to-long range air defense systems was later disputed. Pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian sources suggested that the trucks resembled the eight-wheeled MAN KAT1 trucks used by Patriot air defense batteries, particularly the M901 launcher trucks or M903 trucks. The configuration of the driver’s windows and other features indicated a closer resemblance to the Patriot system.
Impact of the Losses
If confirmed, the loss of the M901s or M903s would represent a significant blow to the Ukrainian forces, impacting the veteran crews and leading to the depletion of defensive missiles. However, with each of the Ukrainian Air Force’s three Patriot batteries containing multiple launchers and additional support vehicles, the loss of one or two TELARs, while substantial, would not incapacitate the entire battery. The recent loss of another key asset, an M142 HIMARS rocket launcher, further underscores the challenges faced by the Ukrainian forces.
