Officer Zach Martinez, of San Diego, was recently discharged from the hospital after being critically injured in a collision that tragically claimed the life of Officer Austin Machitar.
The Incident
The incident occurred on August 26 at approximately 11:30 p.m., following the attempted traffic stop of a speeding vehicle driven by a 16-year-old who fled from officers, leading to a brief pursuit. Despite the pursuit being called off due to unsafe speeds, Machitar and Martinez were responding to the call when they were struck by the suspect's vehicle, with the impact resulting in devastating consequences.
A Miraculous Recovery
Martinez's release from the hospital marks a significant milestone in his recovery journey, which remains arduous. Despite his long road to recovery, both he and the San Diego Police Department are thankful for his release. Martinez, a 27-year-old Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and member of the Navy Reserves withí 1.5 years of service in the police department, faced life-threatening injuries in the collision.

The collision also resulted in the untimely death of Officer Machitar, who was driving the police vehicle at the time of the crash. Additionally, the 16-year-old driver of the speeding vehicle that initiated the pursuit also lost their life in the incident. The circumstances surrounding the crash and the events leading to it are currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Hospitalized at UC San Diego Health, Martinez endured a traumatic period following the accident. Described as fighting for his life, he sustained severe burns, a broken neck, and multiple facial injuries. Thankfully, there was no paralysis associated with the neck injury. Dr. Diane Wintz, the trauma medical director at Sharp Memorial Hospital, reported on the nature of his injuries and the subsequent medical care he received.
