San Francisco sees surge in sea lion visitors despite human tourism slump

Since the pandemic, San Francisco has experienced a notable decrease in human visitors. However, the same cannot be said for sea lions, as they are arriving in the city in unprecedented numbers.

Sea lion counters have recently reported a staggering 2,000 of these creatures in the waters near Pier 39, surpassing the previous record of 1,400 set in the early 1990s. This incredible influx is a cause for fascination and curiosity among locals and experts alike.

Harbor Master's Perspective

Sheila Chandor, the harbor master at Pier 39 since 1985, expressed amazement at the surge of sea lions. "They're not buying the doom loop!" she exclaimed with amusement, in reference to the prevailing theory that San Francisco is facing a bleak future. "We have been truly overrun," she added with a chuckle, highlighting the unexpected and delightful turn of events.
