Santorini Residents Oppose Overtourism as Influx Threatens Island's Charm
Tourism in Greece, particularly to Santorini, has boomed, sparking concerns among locals about the negative impacts of mass tourism.

The idyllic beauty of Santorini has long attracted tourists, but the increasing influx of visitors is causing concerns for the local community. The picturesque island, located about 297 miles south of Athens, has seen a significant rise in tourism, which has sparked unease among many residents.
Local Discontent
Despite the widespread allure of Santorini's natural splendor, a large number of residents are expressing discontent over the mass tourism that is transforming their once serene home. The growing crowds, particularly during the island's famed sunset, have become a source of frustration for the 20,000 permanent residents.
Pressure on Infrastructure and Housing
The substantial increase in foreign tourists, with around 3.4 million visiting the island in the previous year, is placing strain on the island's infrastructure. Mayor Nikos Zorzos revealed that the outdated infrastructure is struggling to cope with the rising numbers of visitors, and the housing market is becoming unaffordable for many locals.
