Senate Republicans Block Legislation to Codify Right to Contraception Access
Senate Republicans blocked a bill to protect nationwide contraception access, leaving Democrats nine votes short of the 60 needed.
Today, Senate Republicans obstructed the progress of a bill aimed at enshrining the right to contraception access across the nation. The motion was brought by Democrats to bring attention to a key issue where the G.O.P. stands in contrast to the views of a large majority of the electorate.
Republican Opposition
All but two Republican Senators, specifically Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, voted against moving forward with the legislation. This resulted in Democrats falling nine votes short of the 60 required to proceed with the bill. The proposed legislation aimed to safeguard a vital reproductive health choice that many voters fear is actively under threat of being taken away.
Democratic Response
Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington, expressed her disappointment, stating, “This should be an easy vote,” highlighting the majority support for the bill. She emphasized the unnecessary nature of the vote, given the widespread public backing for the protection of contraception access.
Ms. Murray also pointed out that Republican lawmakers have further entrenched the need for such legislation by pushing for anti-abortion measures that could potentially restrict access to contraceptives such as Plan B and IUDs.
