Senator Dick Durbin Announces Retirement, Opening Competitive Primary for Key Illinois Senate Seat
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., will not seek re-election in 2026, ending his long congressional career and opening a competitive primary for his seat.

On Wednesday, Senator Dick Durbin, a prominent Democrat from Illinois, announced his decision not to seek re-election in 2026, marking the end of his extensive career in Congress. This announcement is expected to create a significant opportunity for other political figures in Illinois and open up a leadership position in the Senate.
Durbin's Legacy in Congress
At 80, Durbin is one of the most senior members of the Senate, having been elected in 1996. Before that, he served in the House of Representatives for 14 years. His legislative achievements include steering 235 federal judges through the Judiciary Committee from 2021-2024, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. He also played a crucial role in banning smoking on airplanes and advocating for various criminal justice reforms. Additionally, Durbin was the original author of the DREAM Act, aimed at providing a path to citizenship for young people brought to the country illegally, although it never passed. However, it paved the way for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program established by executive action in 2012.
Impact on Illinois Politics
Durbin's decision to step aside has created a vacancy that is likely to attract considerable interest from Illinois Democrats. A recent poll conducted by the progressive group 314 Action tested a potential Democratic primary field that included Representatives Lauren Underwood, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Robin Kelly, as well as Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton. Krishnamoorthi, who has been serving in the House since 2017, is reportedly considering entering the Senate race and has been accumulating funds for a potential bid. He raised over $3 million in the first quarter of the year and has $19 million in reserve. Underwood's campaign started April with $1.1 million on hand, compared to $2 million for Kelly. Stratton has also initiated a federal political action committee earlier this year.
Potential Shifts in Leadership
The political landscape in Illinois may experience further shifts, as Democratic Governor JB Pritzker has yet to confirm his plans for re-election next year. Speculations arise that if he decides to step down, it could lead to significant interest among Democrats for the open governor's seat, especially if he is contemplating a potential presidential bid in 2028.
Continuing Democratic Influence
Despite former President Donald Trump making gains in Illinois in the previous elections, Durbin's seat is expected to remain in Democratic control. In the November elections, then-Vice President Kamala Harris won Illinois by a margin of 11 percentage points, securing 54% of the vote. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer commended Durbin's contributions, emphasizing his commitment to justice, advocacy for Americans in need, and wise leadership, which, in Schumer's view, have positively impacted both the Senate and the country.
