Severe Storm Hits New York City, Lightning Strikes Statue of Liberty in Electrifying Portrait
Series of extreme weather hits New York City, including lightning striking the Statue of Liberty, a powerful earthquake, and fatal storm damage.

A series of extreme weather events has hit New York City in the past week, causing chaos and destruction across the metropolitan area. The city experienced a severe storm with damaging winds, heavy rain and lightning, followed by a powerful earthquake that rattled the city and neighboring areas all the way to Philadelphia. The unusual and dramatic nature of these events has left residents and authorities stunned.
During the storm, a stunning and almost surreal moment was captured by photographer Dan Martland. He managed to take a photograph of a bolt of lightning striking the Statue of Liberty, creating an electric and awe-inspiring portrait. The image, which appears to show the lightning emerging from Lady Liberty's torch, has garnered significant attention on social media and beyond.
"I usually track the weather with apps and head out if it's looking good," Martland wrote. "I've had times where I've been out for eight hours and got nothing. Today was only an hour. The storm passed pretty quick. And the apps showed that there was no more cells coming my way."
Photographer's Dedication and Talent
Responding to inquiries regarding the authenticity of the image, Martland clarified that the shots are genuine and not artificially staged. He explained that he used a lightning trigger to capture these spectacular moments. This is not the first time Martland has captured lightning striking the Statue of Liberty; a similar image from April 2023 is also featured on his Instagram account.
Tragically, the storm's impact extended beyond the captivating visuals. The strong gusts and lightning caused destruction, including falling trees that led to the unfortunate death of Catherine Tusiani in Westchester County. Authorities reported that heavy winds caused a tree to fall onto her car as she was driving home, resulting in her untimely passing.
Citywide Effects
The storm triggered multiple incidents of falling trees across New York City, with damage to property and vehicles, as well as power outages in various neighborhoods. The widespread nature of the storm's effects prompted authorities to issue a flood warning and advise vigilance for fallen trees, branches, and power lines.
Despite the heaviest flood threats subsiding, the city continues to face challenges, with scattered showers and occasional strong winds. The recovery efforts are ongoing as the affected areas strive to overcome the aftermath of the destructive weather events.
The recent weather anomalies in New York City serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and formidable forces of nature. The city and its residents are now focused on recovery and rebuilding, demonstrating resilience in the face of these extraordinary circumstances.
