Mysterious Shooting Near Fort Liberty Under Investigation Amid Foreign National Surveillance Concerns
Investigation of a shooting near Fort Liberty involving Chechen men who allegedly trespassed on a Special Forces soldier's property. Army is investigating.

A mysterious shooting incident in Carthage, North Carolina, near Fort Liberty, formerly known as Fort Bragg, is currently under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Division and local police. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:15 pm, and the individuals involved are two Chechen men who were found near the residence of a U.S. Special Forces soldier. The incident is being treated with utmost seriousness, as it occurred in close proximity to where some of America’s most elite U.S. Special Operations forces live and train.
The shooting took place following a phone call reporting a suspected trespasser near the Special Forces soldier's property. The family claims that the suspected intruder, 35-year-old Ramzan Daraev of Chicago, was found taking photos of their children. An altercation ensued when he was confronted near a power line in the wooded area of the property, resulting in Daraev being shot several times at close range. Another man, Dzhankutov Adsalan, who was in a vehicle at some distance from the incident, was questioned by authorities and subsequently released. The Moore County Sheriff's office is leading the investigation, with the FBI providing assistance to overcome the language barrier for interviews.
Possible Foreign National Focus
Sheriff Ronnie Fields provided a statement indicating that the incident may have involved foreign nationals focused on U.S. military installations. The deceased individual was found approximately 250 yards from the roadway, along a powerline on the residential property. It was noted that the shooter has been identified as a Colonel with the U.S. Army, residing at the location of the shooting. This incident has raised concerns around the country, as U.S. Special Operations soldiers have reported strange interactions in recent years, with many believing that U.S. military bases have become targets of foreign probes.
It was revealed that Daraev was working as a subcontractor for a company based in New Jersey at the time of his death. However, investigators are still working to verify his official employment and immigration status. Additionally, it was noted that the two Chechens had no personal identification but were found in possession of two cell phones with Russian language contacts and camera equipment. They were not wearing any uniforms for the power company that reportedly employed them.
Past Incidents and Investigations
The local authorities are also looking into a separate incident that occurred 18 months ago, which targeted two electrical distribution substations in Moore County. This incident left up to 40,000 residential and business customers without power in North Carolina for nearly 2 weeks, affecting communities heavily populated by U.S. Special Operations families. Despite these incidents, the FBI has not opened a counterintelligence investigation, stating that the local investigation has not uncovered evidence of a federal crime. It remains prepared to investigate if a federal matter comes to light.
The family of Ramzan Daraev has launched a petition for justice, expressing disbelief that such an injustice could occur in a free country where he should have received protection. This shooting incident has raised questions within the Special Operations community, particularly regarding the presence of two Russian-speaking Chechens near an elite Army special forces residence at a late hour, prompting inquiries about the FBI's level of involvement in the investigation.
