Shootings in Cincinnati Drop 4.5% Year to Date, Juvenile Shootings Halved

Cincinnati Police Department reports fewer shootings in 2024, down 4.5% from last year, with a significant drop in juvenile shootings.

As of the latest data released by the Cincinnati Police Department, there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of shooting incidents in the city when compared to the previous year.

Reduction in Shootings Citywide

Year to date, the city has seen a decline of approximately 4.5% in the total number of shootings, signaling a positive trend in public safety. Moreover, the data shows a significant drop in the shooting of juveniles, with the current figure less than half of what it was during the same period last year. Specifically, by this time last year, 39 juveniles had been shot, compared to 18 this year.

Comparison with Previous Years

While the current number of shootings remains approximately 9% higher than the levels observed in 2018 and 2019, which were relatively low in violence, it is important to note that the figure is about 25% lower than the spike in violence witnessed in 2020.

Neighborhood-specific Data

The data further reveals that key neighborhoods such as Over-the-Rhine, West End, and Roselawn have experienced a considerable reduction in shootings during the first half of 2024, contributing significantly to the overall decline in the city's shooting incidents. However, there has been a rise in violence in certain areas, with the city encountering two mass shootings in the past three weeks.

Incidents of Mass Shootings

Regrettably, the city saw two mass shootings within a short span of time. The most recent incident occurred in Corryville, resulting in one injury and the loss of three lives, including that of a father and son. Another mass shooting at a Madisonville park on June 15 left five individuals wounded.

Challenges in Specific Neighborhoods

On a concerning note, the neighborhood of Avondale has experienced a notable surge in violence, with the number of homicides doubling. Data from the Cincinnati Police Department indicates that during the first five months of 2024, 17 individuals were shot in Avondale, out of which six succumbed to their injuries. This marks a stark increase compared to the same period last year, during which 12 individuals were shot, and three of them lost their lives.
