Storms and Heat Wave Leave Thousands Without Power in Southeast Michigan
Severe storms hit southeast Michigan, causing power outages for thousands. Amid a heat wave, residents like Lindsey Brenz face sweltering conditions without electricity.

Residents of southeast Michigan faced the wrath of severe storms this week as strong winds and lightning wreaked havoc in the region. Lindsey Brenz, a local resident, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing trees being uprooted and hearing the ominous sound of a power surge amid the chaos.
Widespread Power Outages
The aftermath of the storms resulted in a widespread power outage, affecting approximately 69,000 customers in the area. The downed trees and power lines compounded the impact of an intense heat wave that has engulfed the Midwest and other parts of the country.
Continuing Disruption
Even three days after the initial outage, around 7,000 customers continue to grapple with the absence of electricity, as reported by DTE Energy, a prominent Detroit-based utilities company serving the region.
Prolonged Heat Wave
Detroit has been enduring scorching temperatures in the 90s since the commencement of the heat wave on Monday. The heat index, which factors in humidity to represent the perceived temperature, soared to 95 degrees on Saturday afternoon, exacerbating the discomfort caused by the outage.
Challenges Faced by Residents
Lindsey Brenz's top priority during the outage was ensuring the well-being of herself and her cat, Bubba, amidst the sweltering conditions. She resorted to closing windows, drawing blinds, and refraining from showering to maintain a tolerable environment within her residence in Berkley.
