An assault carried out by Sudanese paramilitaries using guns and artillery in the main farming region of Sudan resulted in the tragic death of a minimum of 104 individuals, including numerous children, according to information provided by Sudanese pro-democracy activists.
Disputed Circumstances
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday at Wad al-Noura, a village located 70 miles to the south of the capital, Khartoum, has raised controversy regarding the exact circumstances. This has led to international condemnation following the release and verification of images depicting a mass burial on Thursday, circulated on social media.
The high death toll and verified images have drawn widespread international condemnation, making this assault the most recent flashpoint in Sudan's relentless yearlong war.
"Even by the tragic standards of Sudan’s conflict, the images emerging from Wad Al-Noura are heartbreaking," Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the top U.N. official in Sudan, expressed in a statement.
