Sun Unleashes Powerful Storms, Lighting Up Earth and Mars
In May, solar eruptions created stunning northern and southern lights on Earth. Shortly after, Mars faced its strongest solar storm.
In May, the sun unleashed a series of radiation-charged eruptions, creating spectacular displays of the northern and southern lights on Earth as they collided with the planet's magnetic field.
Shortly after Earth's light show, on May 20, another round of solar eruptions hit Mars, causing a significant impact. Shannon Curry, the principal investigator of NASA’s MAVEN at the University of Colorado, Boulder, described this event as "the strongest solar energetic particle event we’ve seen to date" when observed from Mars.
These recent solar storms have highlighted the powerful and far-reaching influence of the sun's activity on celestial bodies throughout the solar system, underscoring the importance of continued study and understanding of space weather.
