Taliban-Linked Shooting Claims Lives of Three Spanish Tourists in Central Afghanistan

On Friday, a tragic incident unfolded in central Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of three Spanish tourists and one Afghan national. The attack, carried out by a gunman, marks the first fatal assault on tourists in the country since the Taliban assumed control in 2021.

Location and Victims

The shooting took place in Bamiyan Province, a picturesque region known for its tranquil valleys, lakes, and ancient artifacts, situated northwest of Kabul. In addition to the fatalities, four other foreigners and three Afghans sustained injuries during the distressing event.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the tourists were targeted by at least one assailant as they were leaving a bazaar in the provincial capital. Eyewitnesses provided an account of the harrowing attack, shedding light on the suddenness and brutality of the assault.

Official Statements and Arrests

Safiullah Rayed, the director of information for Bamiyan Province, confirmed that the victims included Spanish nationals. Following the incident, authorities apprehended four individuals in connection with the attack. Notably, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the tragic event.
