Taylor Swift's Eras Tour: A Boost to Local Economies and the Swift-lift Effect
Taylor Swift's Eras tour has not only captivated audiences worldwide but has also made a significant impact on the local economies of the cities she has visited. The economic influence of the tour has sparked the interest of financial institutions such as the Federal Reserve and Wall Street, drawing attention to the potential effects on both local and national economic indicators.
Local Impact and Nomura's Analysis
A recent report from Japanese investment bank Nomura indicates that Taylor Swift's tour has undeniably boosted the economies of the 20 U.S. cities she visited. Nomura's estimates show that between the first and third quarter of 2023, Swift's tour alone contributed to a 0.03% increase in nominal U.S. retail sales and a 0.02% boost to real gross domestic product (GDP). Throughout the entirety of 2023, the tour accounted for 0.5% of nominal consumption growth, according to the firm's calculations.
While these figures may seem marginal on a national scale, Nomura's global economist Si Ying Toh emphasized the undeniable impact on the local economies of the tour stops. The report highlighted that lodging inflation experienced a significant increase during the month of Swift's visit, with a 2.1 percentage point rise in cities hosting her concerts. In Chicago, for example, lodging prices rose by 3.1 percentage points during Swift's three shows, leading to an 8.1 percentage point increase in occupancy and a 59% rise in hotel revenue per available room. These local changes were also reflected in the consumer price index for the city, which increased by 0.5 percentage points following the singer's visit.
National and International Economic Implications
Nomura's report raised questions about how much of an impact Swift's tour had on national-level economic data. While the boost to consumption has enchanted U.S. economic analysts, there are doubts about the total macroeconomic effect being overstated. Toh noted that it is less likely for these local improvements to materialize in national-level statistics, particularly in larger economies like the U.S., U.K., or Japan. However, she emphasized the significance of events like Swift's tour as potential economic catalysts, particularly for smaller economies such as Singapore and Sweden.
As Taylor Swift's Eras tour is set to conclude near the end of 2024, the economic implications will continue to be monitored. The impact of the tour has not gone unnoticed internationally, and it is recognized as a potential driver of economic activity. Moreover, the film version of the tour, which has already achieved significant box office success, is expected to reach an even broader audience as it begins streaming on Disney+.
