Tensions Rise Between Syrian Refugees and Turks in Wake of Violent Clashes
Tensions between Syrians and Turks lead to violence, revealing strained coexistence and economic distress, with Syrians accused of worsening economic troubles.

Over the last 48 hours, there has been a surge in violent incidents between Syrian refugees and Turkish locals in several cities throughout Turkey. The clashes have resulted in vandalism of refugee-owned businesses and vehicles, as well as physical assaults using fists and knives.
Simultaneously, across the border in northern Syria, where Turkish influence is significant, Syrian civilians have engaged in confrontations with Turkish military personnel. Instances of pelting military vehicles with rocks, removal of Turkish flags, and public condemnation through street protests have been reported.
Strain on Coexistence
These sporadic acts of violence have had dire consequences, leading to the loss of lives, with reports from a credible war monitor confirming at least seven casualties in Syria. It has undeniably laid bare the growing rift in the relationship between Syrians and Turks living on both sides of the shared border.
Years of peaceful cohabitation have been marred due to recent political realignments and worsening economic conditions. The escalating tension stems from the resentment harbored by many Turkish citizens towards the 3.1 million Syrian refugees in the country. The refugees have been unfairly blamed, often without substantiated proof, for exacerbating economic challenges such as meager wages and a staggering inflation rate, which soared to over 75% in May.
