Tragedy Strikes in India as Stampede at Religious Event Claims 50 Lives

On a religious event in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, at least 50 people lost their lives, and many others were injured during a stampede. The tragic incident occurred in the city of Hathras, which is located in western Uttar Pradesh. According to Ashish Kumar, the district magistrate, the majority of the victims were women and children who appeared to have suffocated in the rush to leave the venue. Local authorities suggested that heat and overcrowding had led to the panic.

Authorities' Testimonies

Mr. Kumar stated, "Toward the end of the congregation, when devotees were leaving, this incident took place because of very high humidity." Umesh Kumar Tripathi, a medical officer in the neighboring district of Etah, mentioned that more victims were being brought to other hospitals for medical attention.
