Boat crash in Old Saybrook
A 31-foot motorboat with nine passengers struck a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. on Monday while returning from Block Island, as reported by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.
Upon receiving multiple 911 calls, rescue crews discovered the boat half-submerged and extensively damaged. Tragically, one man was found deceased within the vessel, while six others were promptly transported to the hospital. The boat's operator is in critical condition, as stated by Captain Keith Williams of Connecticut Environmental Police. It is believed that one individual has since been released from the hospital, but the severity of injuries sustained by the others remains undisclosed. Additionally, two individuals are still unaccounted for.
According to Captain Williams, the tide was coming in at the time of the crash.
Comprehensive Search Operation
A comprehensive search operation was initiated, involving multiple agencies including police, fire crews from nearby towns, the State Police Dive Unit, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard station in Cape Cod. The search efforts were temporarily suspended overnight but are set to resume this morning. As Captain Williams stated, the crews are currently in search and recovery mode.
