Authorities have confirmed the unfortunate discovery of a hiker who had been missing since August in the Colorado wilderness. Tragically, the body of Rich Moore, a 71-year-old resident of Pagosa Springs, was located on October 30, as shared by Taos Search and Rescue on social media. Notably, Moore's loyal dog was found alive beside him. The incident unfolded after Moore and his dog embarked on a hike to summit Blackhead Peak, situated approximately 20 miles east of Pagosa Springs, according to the Archuleta County Sheriff's Office.
During the search, which commenced shortly after Moore's disappearance, a hunter stumbled upon his remains in the Lower Blanco drainage basin, a valley southeast of the peak's summit, as reported by the Denver Gazette. Moore's faithful white Jack Russell terrier, Finney, remained faithfully by his side. On October 31, with the assistance of a search and rescue team, personnel from the sheriff's office were airlifted to the area to retrieve Moore's body. Meanwhile, Finney received veterinary care and has since been reunited with her family.
While authorities have not disclosed the cause of Moore's passing, they have assured the public that foul play is not suspected. Blackhead Peak, standing at an elevation of 12,500 feet, is situated in southwestern Colorado's majestic San Juan Mountains.
This tragic incident brings to mind similar events in recent times, where dogs have been found alive next to their deceased owners. Last year, a Labrador was discovered beside a deceased 74-year-old hiker in Arizona, followed by the discovery of a 29-year-old hiker's body in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, accompanied by his faithful canine companion. These heart-wrenching incidents serve as a reminder of the incredible bond that can exist between humans and their beloved pets.
