Authorities in Iran have reported a tragic incident in the southeastern city of Kerman, where a soldier shot and killed five of his comrades at a barracks dormitory. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the identity of the suspect has not been disclosed. The city of Kerman, located approximately 830 kilometers southeast of the capital Tehran, had recently experienced a devastating bombing attack that resulted in the loss of 94 lives and left hundreds injured. The attack had occurred during a ceremony commemorating the death of an Iranian general who had been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in 2020, and it was claimed by the Islamic State group. While such incidents are infrequent, there have been previous reports of similar shootings at military bases in Iran. The country enforces mandatory military service of up to 24 months for men aged 19 and above.
