Trump Appoints Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence, Shifting Political Allegiance
Donald Trump selected former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence, highlighting her extensive service and bipartisan support despite her lack of intelligence experience.

The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced the appointment of Tulsi Gabbard as the director of national intelligence. Gabbard, a former solely member of Congress from 2013 to 2021 representing Hawaii, made headlines due to her transition from a Democrat to a proud Republican. Trump recognized Gabbard's two-decade-long commitment to the nation while making the announcement.
Gabbard's Journey Through Politics
Trump emphasized Gabbard's broad support from both parties, highlighting her previous candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. However, her lack of experience in the field of intelligence raised questions about her suitability for the position. Gabbard also expressed firm opposition to the United States' intervention in the ongoing war in Ukraine, viewing the Biden administration as partly responsible for the conflict.
Controversial Stances and Legal Battles
Gabbard's political journey has not been without controversy. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insinuated in 2019 that Gabbard's candidacy was being manipulated by the Russians, leading Gabbard to sue Clinton for defamation, a lawsuit she later withdrew. In her stance on Syria and its leader, Bashar al-Assad, Gabbard expressed opposition to U.S. involvement, despite having met with Assad in 2017 for a "fact-finding mission" and subsequently labeling him a "brutal dictator." Gabbard's military background includes over 20 years of service in the Army National Guard, with deployments to Iraq and Kuwait. After being elected as a Democrat to represent Hawaii in Congress in 2012, she served four terms while being a member of the Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Foreign Affairs committees.
Shifting Political Allegiances
In a surprising turn, Gabbard made the decision to leave the Democratic Party in 2022, citing its control by an elitist "cabal of warmongers" influenced by "wokeness." Her endorsement of Trump in his presidential bid and subsequent appointment as co-chair of his transition team marked a significant departure from her previous political alignment.
Trump's Cabinet Selections
Amidst these political shifts, Trump has been busy assembling his Cabinet and senior staff in the White House, appointing individuals like Rep. Michael Waltz for national security adviser and former Rep. John Ratcliffe for CIA director. These appointments signal Trump's focus on strengthening national security in his second term.
As Tulsi Gabbard takes on the role of director of national intelligence, her appointment not only reflects a shift in her political allegiances but also raises important questions about her qualifications for the position, particularly in the realm of intelligence and foreign policy.
