Trump's Peace Promises Face Reality as Ukraine Ceasefire Talks Stall
Ceasefire talks between Russia and the U.S. ended without agreement as Russia continues bombing Ukraine, raising doubts about peace prospects.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump faced a harsh reality regarding his promises of a swift resolution to the war in Ukraine. Russian officials announced that the recent ceasefire talks with the U.S. concluded without a written agreement, while the Kremlin persistently bombed Ukrainian civilians.
Unfulfilled Expectations and Blame Game
The media was prepared to receive a statement following the conversations in Saudi Arabia; however, no such written conclusion was released. In an interview with Russian state television, Vladimir Chizhov, the first deputy chairman of Russia's defense committee, placed the blame for the lack of a written agreement on Ukraine's stubbornness.
“They sat for 12 hours and seemed to have agreed on a joint statement,” Chizhov told Rossiya 24. “However, this was not adopted due to Ukraine’s position,” he said, labeling the deadlock as “very characteristic and symptomatic.”
Limited Ceasefire and Conflicting Positions
While both parties have ostensibly agreed to a limited, 30-day ceasefire, Russian President Vladimir Putin has imposed conditions that would effectively amount to a Ukrainian surrender. In contrast, Kyiv argues that the Kremlin is clearly disinterested in peace, as it continues to conduct nightly mass drone attacks against its people.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in dire consequences for Ukrainian civilians, with casualties reported from a recent attack in the city of Sumy - impacting a dense residential area, a children’s hospital, and a school. Authorities have reported 99 people injured, including 23 children, as a result of the attack. Additionally, Russia is said to have launched 139 Iranian-designed "Shahed" drones into Ukraine overnight, causing damage in various regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Odessa.
In response to the relentless attacks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated, “Instead of making hollow statements about peace, Russia must stop bombing our cities and end its war on civilians. Any diplomacy with Moscow must be backed up by firepower, sanctions, and pressure.”
Reciprocal Strikes and Mutual Bombardment
In light of the ongoing aggression from Russia, Ukraine has also launched retaliatory strikes on targets associated with the Kremlin's war effort. The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down a Ukrainian drone aimed at an oil pumping depot that supplies the country's energy exports. The ministry claimed, “The Kiev regime continues to deliberately plan, prepare and carry out attacks on energy infrastructure.”
The mutual bombardment between Russia and Ukraine persists, despite a reported limited ceasefire. The Kremlin has made demands resembling a Ukrainian surrender, further complicating the resolution of the conflict.
