Trump's Tariffs Target Penguins on Remote Islands
Donald Trump's tariffs on over 180 countries include Heard Island and McDonald Islands, home to a large penguin population, sparking criticism and online humor.

In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump's recent trade tariffs have unexpectedly extended to a remote island group in the Antarctic Ocean, home to a large population of penguins.
On Wednesday, Trump announced expansive tariffs on over 180 countries and regions, retaliating against what he perceived as unfair trade practices by other nations. While Russia was notably absent from the list, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, two tiny, largely barren outposts primarily inhabited by penguins, were slapped with a 10% tariff.

The islands, administered by Australia as an external territory, are located about 2,400 miles southwest of mainland Australia. Reaching them requires a two-week voyage and they remain among the world's most remote inhabited places. The group covers 140 square miles and is devoid of permanent human residents.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his astonishment at the inclusion of these islands in Trump's tariff list, calling it "not the act of a friend" and highlighting that "nowhere on Earth is safe from this." Four of Australia's external territories, including Heard Island and McDonald Islands, as well as Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, were subject to this 10% tariff floor imposed by Trump on countries with which the U.S. runs a trade deficit.
Minimal Trade, Maximum Impact
According to the World Bank, Heard and McDonald islands exported approximately $1.4 million worth of goods to the U.S. in 2022, mostly unspecified "machinery and electrical" products. Conversely, the U.S. exported around $21,600 to the islands during the same year. The nature of this trade amidst a lack of human habitation remains unclear. A report by The Guardian suggests that some goods may have been mislabeled as originating from the territory.
Trump's tariffs on these penguin-occupied territories sparked widespread amusement and criticism on social media, generating numerous satirical memes featuring penguins. One popular meme depicts a penguin in a suit, replacing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his tense exchange with Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office.
