Trump Seeks Putin Talks as Russian Jets Near Alaska

NORAD detected Russian aircraft in the Alaskan ADIZ, which is monitored regularly and deemed not a threat despite close encounters with US and Canadian forces.

Russian military aircraft were detected flying within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a statement released by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). While these incidents are not considered a threat, they highlight the ongoing monitoring of Russian military activity near North American airspace.

In both instances, NORAD confirmed that the detected Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not encroach upon American or Canadian sovereign territory. The ADIZ, as defined by NORAD, extends beyond national airspace, encompassing a designated area of international airspace where all aircraft are closely monitored for national security purposes.

Regular Activity, Close Monitoring

NORAD emphasized that this type of activity involving Russian aircraft in the ADIZ is not uncommon and is continuously monitored. However, the recent detections coincide with President Donald Trump's efforts to initiate negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The latest incidents follow a previous instance in September when NORAD reported multiple Russian military aircraft operating in the Arctic region. Although these aircraft also remained within international airspace, NORAD deployed combat air patrols from both its Canadian and Alaskan regions to closely track the activity.

Dangerous Encounters

In a separate incident captured on video, a Russian Su-35 aircraft performed an abrupt maneuver directly in front of a NORAD F-16 over the ADIZ, seemingly taking the F-16 by surprise. This "unprofessional air maneuver" as described by NORAD, occurred during a routine intercept of a Russian Tu-95 aircraft on September 23.

General Gregory Guillot, Commander of both the North American Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command, strongly condemned this dangerous behavior in a statement. He asserted that while NORAD aircraft conducted a safe and disciplined intercept of the Russian military aircraft, the actions of one Russian Su-35 pilot were unsafe, unprofessional, and posed a risk to all involved.

This incident underscores the importance of professional conduct and adherence to established safety protocols in airspace operations, particularly when dealing with potentially sensitive geopolitical situations.
