Two Arrested in Fatal Attack on New York Sergeant, Police Say
Sergeant killed at Batavia Downs after breaking up dispute. Two arrests made, Elmore and Wilcox facing felony charges. Colleagues performing CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Sunday, March 10, 2024, tragedy struck at Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel in New York, resulting in the death of Genesee County Sheriff's Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello. This unfortunate incident transpired after a dispute was reported at the establishment, involving two individuals who were subsequently escorted out of the casino by the sergeant. The situation took a violent turn when one of the individuals, Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, became combative, leading to an altercation.
Assault and fatality
During the confrontation, Michael J. Elmore returned to the scene and engaged in an altercation. Elmore utilized a large metal necklace chain as a weapon, putting Sgt. Sanfratello in a chokehold and physically assaulting him. Tragically, despite the efforts of Batavia Downs security staff and bystanders who administered CPR, Sgt. Sanfratello succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Arrests and Charges
Following the devastating incident, authorities charged Elmore, 33, with three felonies, including aggravated manslaughter in the first degree, aggravated felony assault upon a police officer, and felony burglary in the second degree. Wilcox, 39, faced charges of felony burglary in the second degree and attempted felony assault in the second degree.
Legacy of Sgt. Sanfratello
Sgt. Sanfratello, a dedicated veteran of the sheriff's office with 32 years of service, had a distinguished career, initially joining as a dispatcher in 1992 before progressing to the roles of deputy sheriff in 1996 and sergeant in 2007. His outstanding contributions were recognized through the presentation of the Deputy of the Year award on two occasions.
Police Appeal for Information
Authorities have called upon individuals who witnessed the altercation or possess video footage of the incident to come forward and assist the Batavia Police Department Detective Bureau in their investigation.
